11 Questions With...Mama Cutsworth

>> Sunday 28 June 2009

Mama Cutsworth is one of Winnipeg’s finest and most beloved DJs. A lover of all music genres, Cutsworth’s playful record-spinning sets draw from old school funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, and, yes, even the folk-comedy stylings of The Flight of the Conchords. The winner of 2006’s epic DJ battle Clash of the Titans, she’s been working crowds around these parts into a jubilant frenzy for years. Tomorrow she gets to show off her party starting skills at the Pyramid as the opening act for scintillating English chanteuse Alice Russell, part of this year’s impossibly great Jazz Fest lineup.

I had the privilege to ask Mama Cutsworth 11 questions, and her eloquent answers are definitely amongst the best I have ever received. Thanks to her for doing this!

1. Where is the best venue to catch a show in our fair town?

That really depends on the kind of show we're talking about. The Lo Pub is
the coziest Cheers-style spot these days, but the sight-lines can be
awfully tricky to actually SEE the show. That being said, I've caught so
many amazing and intimate performances there [The Acorn, Lebeato, Jenn
Grant, Dan Mangan...]; Jack Jonasson knows how to book acts. The
contagious Tex-Mex awesomeness of the Times Change(d) comes in at second.

2. Who is your favourite Winnipeg-based band/musician?

Winnipeg is blessed with a rich depth and breadth of music-makers. It's
insanely hard to pin it down to just one favourite. But when it comes to
pure songwriting and a voice that I never get tired of, I would pick the
very underrated musician Chris Neufeld. "Colorado Low" is a beautiful,
beautiful album that I've played on repeat numerous times. And his new
project the Other Brothers [with Winkler's Donovan Giesbrecht] is
something folks should check out too!

3. What’s the worst bus route in the city?

I don't know about the worst, but the route that fascinates me the most is
the number 16. I think it is one of the longest routes in the city,
covering Island Lakes/St. Vital to the far reaches of the north end. I
used ride it for 2 hours every day, passing through Osborne, downtown, up
Main, down Selkirk Avenue, all the way to the very end at Burrows. Since
that bus ventures into so many neighbourhoods, the variety of people
stepping on and off that bus cut a real nice cross-section of our
population.

4. What are your top three, all-time desert-island records?

Oh geez. I'm not one to develop all-time hands-down favourites, but I'll
give it a go in the context of what I'd want to hear all alone, needing a
little comfort since I'm trapped on an island. Josh Rouse's "Subtítulo"
[2006], the Ramsey Lewis Trio's "The Groover" [1966], and Wilco's "Yankee
Hotel Foxtrot" [2001]. I love a heck of a lot more music, but I thought of
those first, so that's what we're going with.

5. Of the albums you own, which has the best cover art?

Nice question. As a record collector, I really appreciate cover art in a
large-format setting. But one of my favourite covers, when it comes to
creativity, I don't own on vinyl. I know, weird. "Opus Daily," a disc from
Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop features a cover that my pal Mike the 2600 King
designed. It's a photo of paper cut out to look like a particular font,
pinned to a wall with thumbtacks. It's a nice twist on taking something
that could have been designed digitally and throwing in a real handmade
angle.

6. What was the last great concert you saw?

That would be the Danny Michel show at the new West End, with my dear
friend Jo Snyder [Sixty Stories/Anthem Red] opening for him. Both of their
sets made me overjoyed. Danny's been a favourite live performer of mine
for a while now - his songs are good, but when he's there in the flesh
it's magic. Jo, who grew up in the same town as Danny but had never met
him before, joined him for a cover of Tom Waits' "Time" and the night was
complete. Walking out of a show with a light heart, wiping a tear off your
cheek is pretty much the best.

7. Would you rather have invisibility or flight?

Well if you're telling me that stopping time is out of the question, then
I'd go with flight, mostly because I can only think of criminal
applications for invisibility and that's just not cool. Flight, yes
flight, would be the way to go.

8. Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy?

I think of The Simpsons sort of as the "comfort food" option of those
three, having seen pretty much all of them. But for some reason, I
rediscovered South Park in the last year and it's level of accurate and
timely commentary - on pretty much anything that happens - has me really
impressed. It's currently number one. Family Guy will always be third.

9. What's one Flight of the Conchords song you can't live without?

Oh heck, that's fightin' dirty; I think of those guys like my personal
soundtrack makers. "Business Time" will always be my introduction to Brett
and Jemaine. I remember playing that song from a dubbed taping off TV on
my CKUW show, Stylus Radio, so many years ago now. And although that
song's never lost it's charm, these days I'd have to go with "Ladies of
the World." I've been known to sneak that into the odd slow-jam set when
I'm DJing. And when it comes to music promoting work peace, what better
lyrics are there than "Redheads not warheads/ Blondes not bombs/ We're
talkin' about brunettes not fighter jets/ It's got to be Sweet 16's not
M-16's/ When will the governments realize it's got to be funky sexy
ladies?"

10. What book(s) are you currently reading?

I'm a habitual multi-reader. I find that I have to switch to the book that
fits my mood or time of day type of thing. I'm in the middle of Michael
Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma," Gil Adamson's novel "The Outlander,"
and the thickest kids' book you've ever seen, called "The Thirteen and a
Half Lives of Captain Bluebear" by Walter Moers. I'm also looking for
second-hand copies of Book The Ninth and Book the Eleventh of the Series
of Unfortunate Events, if anyone cares.

11. And finally…who’s your favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
(Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, or Raphael?

You know I used to know all the lyrics to that theme song... Being the
typical control-freak oldest child, I always had a penchant for the
leader, Leonardo.

Cut Off Your Hands - Live At The Albert

I'm nursing a hangover today and am in desperate need of a brain-cleansing nap, so this'll be a quick one.

Made my way down to the Albert last night and caught New Zealand Brit-Pop channelers Cut Off Your Hands. It was a sparsely attended show (50ish people) yet this completely unfazed the talented foursome who tore through a short, spirited set, essentially playing their debut You And I in its entirety. It was a lot of dancy fun, and I'm glad I went.

I'm certain COYH are gonna be big stars some day.

11 Questions With...The Main Drag

>> Tuesday 23 June 2009

Hailing from Beantown, The Main Drag are a indie-rock band with fiery hype trailing behind them like a comet's tail. Salon.com dubbed them "Best Unsigned Artist", a tune of their was prominently featured in Rock Band 2, and their album reached #78 on the highly coveted CMJ charts. Pretty impressive for a quintet without a label backing them! And, when not making buzz-worthy records, all the guys work for Harmonix, the video game developing company about to release the much-anticipated Rock Band: Beatles into the world.

Despite their enviably cool day jobs, The Main Drag are out promoting their latest album, Yours as Fast as Mine, all around North America, a trek which sees them land at the Lo Pub on June 24th (tomorrow!).

I've got a copy of Yours as Fast as Mine to give away. If you want one, flip me a quick email by noon on Sunday with the subject line "The Main Drag - CD Giveaway" and be sure to include your full name. The usual rules and regulations apply: one entry per person, winner will be drawn randomly then emailed, etc.

On top of sending me a disc to offer up to my readers, the band's tv-loving drummer John Drake answered 11 Qs. Here's what the amiable fellow had to say:

1. Where are you right now?

I'm in a hotel room in downtown Los Angeles. We just finished E3, a huge video game show, where our crew was showing off and demoing the new game, The Beatles: Rock Band. We did about 40 demos in 3 days and spent most of that time singing harmonies, so I'm currently lying face down in a heap!

2. Which album boasts the best cover art?

I'm still a big fan of the collages of Sgt. Peppers or Revolver stand out.

3. What are your top three, all-time favourite records?

Speaking for me, I'm a big fan of Change by The Dismemberment Plan, Live at Leeds by The Who and Purple Rain by Prince.

4. PC or Mac?

Mac all the way. We mix and track on a PC now, but everything else lives on our Mac Laptops.

5. Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert?

I've got to go with Colbert (though it's a tight race). His musicality turns it for me...did you know he was in a new wave band, Stephen and the Colberts? You should google their smash hit "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)"

6. Would you rather have Invisibility or Flight?

Flight. We travel a lot and the ability to leapfrog traffic would be wicked helpful.

7. What is one song you love, but dismiss as “a guilty pleasure”?

While I don't believe in guilty pleasures (I love all kinds of music unironically!), I'm going to say that "Backstreet's Back" by the Backstreet Boys is undeniably danceable. There, I said it.

8. What was the last great concert you saw?

I had the opportunity to see the Who in a 1200 seat theater from the third row with our lead singer, Matt. That blew my mind. Otherwise, I was able to catch a few great shows down at SXSW this year, including Ra Ra Riot, that enjoyed a great deal!

9. What tv shows are you currently following?

TV is a passion of mine, so that's a lengthy answer. In terms of shows currently on the air, Matt and I are both digging Weeds Season 5, and I'm following So You Think You Can Dance, which I think is the most talent loaded show on TV. I love to dance, but man, those people are superhuman. Beyond that, we watch a lot of Colbert Report and Daily Show and a boatload of cartoons.

10. What’s one film you watch over and over again?

Purple Rain by Prince. Easily.

11. And finally…who’s your favourite New Kid on the Block (Donnie, Danny, Joey, Jordan, or Jonathan)?

Donnie. He's the tough one with the soft center and he's got mad family hookups!

11 Questions With...The Furr

>> Tuesday 16 June 2009

Winnipeg’s The Furr make good ol’ indie r’n’r with an emphasis on brain-sticking melodies. Their song "You're So Popular", off their EP The How Fortunate You Are and available for free on their website, embodies their aesthetic - it's an irresistible little number with a huge, resounding sing-a-long chorus. Comprised of dynamic foursome Darcy Penner, Spencer Chambers, Matt Dyck, Matt Austman (left-to-right in the photo), The Furr are gearing up for a June 19th appearance at Toronto’s sure-to-be-awesome NXNE festival, yet still took the time to answer some interest-revealing Qs for me (well, Matt Austman did).

Here’s what Matt had to say (thanks to him for doing this). Oh, and you can catch the guys round these parts on Sunday: they're performing a couple shows in celebration of World Music Day (which coincidentally falls on Father's Day this year).

1. Where are you right now?

My basement apartment!

2. Who is your favourite Winnipeg-based band (other than your own, of course)?

The Waking Eyes, although there's several others I'm quite fond of.

3. Where is the best venue to catch a show in our fair town?

The Cavern!

4. What’s the worst bus route in the city?

Any bus route on a Sunday, seriously, it's all brutal then. Actually even during the week most buses I find run late, or rush their route, and smell really bad. And people always look miserable on the bus, almost all have looks of utter despair, it's depressing and bleak. Not to discourage people from taking the bus though, it's good for the environment. We need people to take it, then the government will invest in it more. Don't even get me started.

5. What are your top three, all-time favourite records?

The Velvet Underground & Nico
Weezer (Blue Album)
Against Me! (Reinventing Axl Rose)

6. Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert?

Both have their own unique styles, but I'll go with Colbert. He makes me giggle.

7. At this very moment, would you rather listen to Radiohead or The Beatles?

The Beatles

8. What is one song you love, but dismiss as “a guilty pleasure”?

I cannot get “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga out of my head. I feel a bit guilty that I may like it.

9. What’s your favourite all-time film?

Sin City totally blew me away, and still does every time I see it. I'll go with that. I find good, well thought out endings are important to me.

10. What book(s) are you currently reading?

The Malaise of Modernity by Charles Taylor

11. And finally…who’s your favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, or Raphael?

Leonardo! There's just something about him.

Ágætis Byrjun

>> Saturday 13 June 2009

So about ten years ago (yesterday, to be precise) a quartet of inspired Icelandic lads known as Sigur Rós launched their brand new album Ágætis Byrjun in their nation’s capital, Reykjavik. The record-dropping party was reportedly stunning, and the initial 1500-copy pressing quickly sold out.

Over the next few months Ágætis Byrjun spread virally, as more and more music lovers became seduced by the band’s elegant, richly textured, heartbreakingly lovely atmospherics. A sound further brought to life by lead singer Jonsi’s audacious cello-bow-across-guitar scraping and piercing eunuch cry.

Sung in a made up language, too!

Countless reports of fans weeping during concerts poured in. Well-deserved superlatives were thrown around. Melody Maker called it the sound, “Of god crying golden tears in heaven”; Internet critics Pitchfork stated, matter-of-factly, how Sigur Rós are, “The first vital band of the 21st century” while I bluntly shouted to anyone within range, “Damn, this is fucking great!”

To get a copy of Ágætis Byrjun I had to import it from their label which meant a hefty forty dollar price tag. $40 well spent. To this day, it is still amongst my favourite records, would definitely make my top five desert island choices, and is the album I have listened to most over the past nine years. I’ve seen Sigur Rós live in Minneapolis twice now, in 2005 and 2008, and if I get a third opportunity, I’ll gladly go again. With luck and some praying to the benevolent Winnipeg music deities, they’ll come here (after all, the gods answered my Iron & Wine prayers).

Yesterday, I had intended on looping the album, in tribute, but the distracting combination of work, game seven of the Stanley Cup, and a few litres of beer prevented this. So, here I am, a day later, listening to this album in its entirety.

And thinking, "Damn…this is still fucking great!"

11 Questions...With Haunter

>> Tuesday 9 June 2009

Photo: Craig William Dueck

Homegrown rockers Haunter are a band who unapologetically channel the early-to-mid 90s indie spirit and fuse it with some modern college-rock. The resulting sound, then, is a pensive, subtly distorted and undeniably familiar one that should win over many folks during their current Western Canadian swing with noise-rockers Mt. Royal. Had I not been at the Dears on Saturday, I would’ve been at their Lo Pub gig.

Even though they're on the road, the traveling foursome - Matt, Jory, Marie-France, and Ryan - took the time to answer 11 questions for yours truly; and, by doing so, revealed why they’d choose Invisibility over Flight; debated who’s better: Colbert or Stewart (a draw!); and stated a pretty good reason why Michelangelo is the best ninja turtle.

(But I still think Leonardo and his katana-wielding prowess is the coolest.)

1.Where are you right now?

Lydia's in Saskatoon, SK with Mt. Royal. First gig outside the province!

2. Who is the best Winnipeg-based band (other than your own, of course)?

Right Through (their forthcoming LP sounds fantastic)

3. What’s the worst bus route in the city?

Matt says the 20 Academy, it's never on time, it never runs, and it goes past Kelvin.

4. What are your top three, all-time favourite records?

We can only decide on what our CURRENT favourite albums are... soooo...
Matt: Clayton Park by Thrush Hermit, Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen and Right Through's soon to be released debut album.
Ryan: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco, Electric Mud by Muddy Waters, Doolittle by Pixies
Marie-France: Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics, Poison Idea - Pick Your King, Diamanda Galas - La Serpenta Canta
Jory: Weezer - Blue Album, A Catholic Education - Teenage Fanclub, Savvy Show Stoppers - Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet

5. PC or Mac?

Mac.

6. Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert?

A tie between the 4 of us. Marie-France and Matt say Colbert is "more entertaining and sassier," while Ryan and Jory prefer "intelligence."

7. Would you rather have Invisibility or Flight?

Invisibility has certain advantages like "change rooms and free concerts" according to Ryan and Matt; Despite its pervy associations we choose it.

8. What is one song you love, but dismiss as “a guilty pleasure”?

"Tempted" by Squeeze

9. What was the last great concert you saw?

Marie-France: Leonard Cohen
Ryan: Sam Roberts
Matt & Jory: My Bloody Valentine

10. What book(s) are you currently reading?

Mef: Talks and Dialogues by J. Krishnamurti
Matt: On A Cold Road by Dave Bidini
Ryan: All That is Solid Melts Into Air by Marshall Berman

11. And finally…who’s your favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, or Raphael?

Michelangelo, he's a good fighter, but still knows how to have a good time.

The Dears - Live At The West End Cultural Centre

>> Sunday 7 June 2009

Last night I attended The Dears, my debut show at the revamped West End Cultural Centre, and I was impressed with both the band and the renovated venue.

Now the first time I saw The Dears live was back in December, and their set was cold and robotic, mirroring the outside -30 degree weather. Plus, they were the second of four acts on the bill, so the crowd was pretty threadbare at that point and I assume most were there for Metric (they were the headliners after all).

Last night, The Dears seemed more comfortable, more relaxed and were noticeably tighter playing at the smaller venue (side note: The weather was December-like yesterday, making that a controlled variable).

Their set started in a most unusual manner – band leader Murray’s disembodied, plaintive vocals originating from, um, below? Backstage? Neptune? Where was he? It took a minute or so to realize that Murray was deeply submerged in the sea of people toward the front of the stage and singing through a microphone with a brightly lit tail. Once finished, he clamored back on stage, the rest of the septet materialized, and they broke into a lengthy set that drew heavily from last year's Missiles, with some No Cities Left and Orchestra sprinkled in for good measure. It was moody, intense, and pretty arresting, but at 2+ hours, just a little too long for my liking (could've trimmed 20 or so).

Situated near the front, I couldn’t resist exiting briefly and reemerging on the newly constructed and magnificent Mezzanine to watch/hear a few tunes. It was pretty magical up there. I also appreciated how the merch table/alcohol sales/washrooms are now outside the core stage area and how bathroom goers were no longer in the sight line. Significant, much-needed improvements.

Jets Overhead opened and what I heard - the three songs or so - I liked. Unhurried and lulling indie-rock.

11 Questions With...Spookey Ruben

>> Tuesday 2 June 2009

Ah, Spookey Ruben. There's a name that releases warm and velvety memories of halcyon afternoons watching MuchMusic's VideoFlow with my sis and her best friend. Outside, perfect weather and pristine skies went unnoticed as inside our little trio was glued to the nation's music station in transfixed wonderment, hoping to see the latest vids from mid-90s indie-darlings Pluto, Age of Electric, Treble Charger, or The Gandharvas.

During these lazy summer video-watching sessions, Spookey Ruben's "Wendy McDonald" made frequent appearances on Much, and we couldn't resist the delightfully strange video. I'm not sure what became of the aforementioned bands (I suppose I could google), but Spookey is still prospering, making quirky, diverse music and shooting webisodes for Exclaim, small clips featuring the likes of ex-Pumpkin Melissa Auf Der Mar, BSS's Brendan Canning, and John McEntire of The Sea and Cake.

Spooky is currently touring in support of his latest release Mechanical Royalty, making a stop in our fair town on Thursday at the Pyramid. And even though he has 867 unanswered emails, Spooky still took the time to answer 11 questions for me. Here's what he had to say:
