There Are Angels. In the Clouds. Doin' It.

So New Zealand's "fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" The Flight of the Conchords have just announced a massive North American tour and, sadly, are following the touring-migration patterns of the Boss and The Killers, meaning their flight plans do not see them landing in Winnipeg.

Don't these acts know we're getting an Ikea, that blue Swedish shopping colossus that instantly transforms humble hamlets into certified cities? Sheesh!

FotC Canadian dates are your usual Vancouvers and Torontos, but if you're up for a seven-hour cross-border adventure, you can catch them in Minneapolis on May 3rd.

And now for some shows that
are taking place here:

Local funk-favs Moses Mayes play the Pyramid on May 2nd.

The No Fear Energy Music Tour featuring Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, As I Lay Dying, God Forbid, and Municipal Waste hits the Convention Centre on April 13th.

Il Divo are at the MTS Centre on May 22nd.

Ain't No Party Like My Grandma's Tea Party

A fundraiser for CKUW is taking place at the Pyramid on February 6th featuring local favourites Greg MacPherson, who generously took part in my 11 questions segment, and Novillero.

Portland disco-punkers Glass Candy will rock the party at the Pyramid on March 14th. Should be a pretty bumpin' show.

Sons of York are at the Pyramid on February 7th.

Part of Underoath's massive tour includes a stop at the Garrick on March 12th.

NECRO returns to the Pyramid on March 18th.

Cannibal Corpse are at the Garrick on April 15th.

Oh and Great Lake Swimmers' intimate affair at the Folk Exchange is sold out (thanks to Jeope for the heads up).

This sing-a-long pop goodness of a song, by The Helio Sequence, could be Facebook's theme song, and it might even be as addictive as The Book.

I've listened to it like 20 times today.

Oh, and jazz chanteuse Diana Krall will be at The MTS Centre on April 22nd.

Great Lake Winnipeg Swimmers

>> Thursday, 22 January 2009

It's official - melodic folksters Great Lake Swimmers ARE playing a gig here. They will be at The Folk Exchange on March 23rd, making that week an impressive one for live music in Winnipeg (Bonnie Prince, Serena Ryder, Mindless Self Indulgence, GLS, and Plants & Animals all in a few days' span!)

Opening for GLS is Kate Maki.

Opening for Bloc Party is Hot Hot Heat.

Remember Marcy Playground? Well, they still exist and will be at Silverado's on March 16th.

Finally, tix for GZA and Bonnie "Prince" Billy go on sale Sat via Ticketmaster.

Just Drivin' Round In Jon Voight's Car

Ok, so The Gaslight Anthem are not coming here. My only source, The Park Theatre's website, has removed the show from their calendar, leading me to think it may have been a Show Announcement Mirage, the hallucinatory result of some sort of personal show announcement thirst.

THESET are playing The Church Basement on February 7th which is apparently located at 230 Provencher (thanks to Megan for the heads up).

The Subcity Dwellers play the Albert on March 7th.

Guy Clark, a mentor to the iconic Steve Earle, is at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church on April 5th.

Saskatoon's We Were Lovers will treat Music Trader shoppers to a free in-store gig on March 7th at 2 pm.

According to a comment on their MySpace page, the wonderful Great Lake Swimmers are also playing a (free?) in-store gig round these parts on March 23rd.

Let's hope that's not another mirage.

Asleep On A Train

>> Saturday, 17 January 2009

You know just last week I mentioned/complained to a friend how there’s really not a lot of great indie shows on the horizon and how our city seemed to be in a sort of announcement funk. His response was, on hindsight, fairly obvious: Would you want to tour Canada, let alone stop in Winnipeg, in the winter?

Point acknowledged. (Aside: Let’s hear it for the weather today! Oh, glorious reprieve!)

Anyway…over the past ten days or so a remarkable number of exciting shows have been announced and here are some more:

Plants and Animals - Polaris-Prize Nominees / artists who earned the #5 spot on my Top Ten Records Of The Year List (which is, arguably, just as good as a Polaris nom) - play the Park Theatre on March 24nd. Pending school, I’ll be there.

The creatively-named dd/mm/yyyy will be at The Albert on 23/02/2009.

According to The Park Theatre’s website The Gaslight Anthem will be here on April 5th; however, I can’t seem to find any corroborating evidence for this show, hence me typing the blame-deflecting “according to”. Until I find a second source, I won't put this on the right.

Senses Fail are at the Garrick on April 13th.

Bloc Party Presale - Deus Ex Machina

>> Thursday, 15 January 2009

Just got a flurry of emails about presale passwords for Bloc Party's gig at the Burt: MARSHA or ONEMON or ONEMONTH. I used MARSHA and got wicked seats!

Also, Propagandhi is at the Garrick on March 20th.
