Evening Headlines: Jane Siberry! Skydiggers! Bands vs. Filmmakers!

First up, the inimitable Jane Siberry returns to the WECC for a gig on Sunday, May 6th.

Also, roots-rock veterans Skydiggers will play a pair of sets at the WECC on Saturday, May 26th. Look for their latest release, Northern Shore, on April 17th via Latent Recordings.

Jayme Stone's Room of Wonders is there on Sunday, May 27th.

Show I missed listing: Sepultura and Death Angel are at the Pyramid on Wednesday, April 18th.

Buck 65 (Rich Terfry) is taking a break from his highly enviable Radio 2 Drive day job and heading West in May for a brief tour. Check him out at the Pyramid on Friday, May 11th. 

The second annual Bands vs. Filmmakers event goes down this year on Thursday, May 31st. This year the event features:

Bands: SitDownTracy, Cannon Bros., Nova, The Magnificent 7s, and This Hisses

Evening Headlines: Scissor Kicks and Album Release Parties

Happy New Year, Dear Readers!

Lots of concert doin's a transpirin' around Winnipeg these days, so let's dive right on in:

• Chart-topping, Rock and Rock Hall of Fame act Van Halen (Eddie, Alex, Wolfgang, and David) is scheduled to rock the MTS Centre for the first time on May 17th.  Look for their new record, A Different Kind of Truth, on February 7th if ya feel like scissor kicking. 

• Lucy Rose as well as The Darcys are supporting Bombay Bicycle Club at the WECC on February 25th.

• Speaking of the WECC, Montreal-based Jazz act Yves Leveille Quartet is there on February 9th.

• Resident singer-songwriter Jenny Berkel is releasing her debut full-length, Here on a Wire, at the Exchange Community Church on Saturday, January 14th. The Crooked Brothers are also part of the whole soiree. 

• Speaking of local musical talent, Demetra Penner is holding her cd release party at Cinematheque on January 25th w/ Keri Latimer.

• Joel Plaskett returns to Peg City for a gig at the Garrick Centre on April 21st. Frank Turner is also on the bill.

• Raizen Band, Phlegm Fatale, and Vav Jungle make up a triple-bill at the Park Theatre going down on January 14th.

•  On Saturday, February 18th, Nathan Rogers sings the songs of his late father, Stan, at the WECC. 

• And finally, Whitehorse-via-Sweden singer-songwriters Sarah MacDougall has three Winnipeg dates on the horizon: February 17th at the Kings Head; and February 18-19 at Festival Du Voyageur.

Afternoon Headlines: New shows at the WECC - John K; Yukon Blonde

Resident troubadour John K. Samson announced a Canadian tour in support of his first-ever solo outing, Provincial (street date: January 24th). He'll be performing songs at the WECC on Tuesday, March 27th.

Indie-rock road warriors Yukon Blonde plays The WECC on March 24th.

And finally, The Cat Empire drops by the Garrick on April 4th.

Evening Headlines: Damo Suzuki to play the WECC; Chad VanGaalen rescheduled

Just a couple of quick notes this evening:

Iconic ex-Can frontman Damo Suzuki will appear at the West End Cultural Centre on March 22nd.

Tonight's Chad VanGaalen gig at the WECC has been cancelled due to inclement weather; however, the show has already been rescheduled for Friday, January 13th.

In Winnipeg Music News...Jenny Berkel CD Fundraiser Show; The Details To Open For Jimmy Eat World

Local songstress Jenny Berkel is holding an album fundraiser and tour kickoff show at the Lo Pub on May 25^th. Joining her on the bill is resident folk acts The Crooked Brother, Fire & Smoke, and The Empty Standards. Look for her full length album sometime this fall. Check back this weekend for "11 Questions..." with the up-and-coming singer-songwriter. 

Winnipeg's  The Details have officially landed the prime opening spot for Jimmy Eat World, next Thursday the 26th at the Garrick. 

Toronto act Dearly Beloved open for Sloan, May 28^th @ The Pyramid.

Vancouver’s Unleash The Archers rock the Albert on June 1^st alongside Laika, Alphakill, and Pathogenic.

Triple bill going down at the Albert on June 6th: Man Your Horse, The Roots in Fluents and Morlords.

The Provincial Archive - fresh off just playing, well, the Manitoba Provincial Archives - make a return trip to Winnipeg for a gig at the Lo Pub on June 6th. 

Spend an evening with Viking Metal band Amon Amarth on August 9th at the Garrick. 

And finally, The Warped 45s play Times Change(d) on June 30th.

In The Future...Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers @ Pantages; Benefit for Cinematheque @ WECC

On Thursday, June 2^nd a benefit for Cinematheque is going down at the WECC featuring John K Samson, Nathan, The Jaxon 3, and The Shallow End (Rod from Novillero’s new band). Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

In The Future...Slayer/Zombie @ MTS Centre; Potential Death Cab Date? (Please!)

For the first time in almost 12 years, Slayer is teaming up with Rob Zombie for a North American tour (w/ Exodus). This includes a stop at the MTS Centre on July 27th.

On May 6th, the Lo Pub hosts a FemRev benefit show featuring The Blowholes, Ian LaRue and the Heartbeat City, and Salinas. All proceeds go to FemRev in support of them hosting the RebELLEs PanCanadian Young Feminist Gathering in Winnipeg from May 20-23.

Singer-songwriter Sam Bradley is at the WECC on May 16th.

And finally, charm-pop quartet Death Cab For Cutie have recently announced a North American tour in support of their new album, Codes & Keys (street date: May 31st). As of now, this does not include a Winnipeg date. However, there are two full days between their Minneapolis show (May 21st) and their Edmonton date (May 24th), so you never know. Time for a Facebook campaign?

In Winnipeg Music News...Les Jupes' New Video; No Sleigh Bells?; Anvil @ The Albert

Local indie-rockers Les Jupes have a very fun and up-close-and-personal new video out for “One Solemn Oath” off their debut record, Modern Myths.

For those who haven’t been reading this site’s comments: Exhibit A and Exhibit B suggest that Sleigh Bells is not coming here with Neon Indian. Which completely sucks.

Legendary metal act ANVIL will fry synapses at the Albert on Tuesday, May 24th.

Canadian crooner Matt Dusk plays McPhillips Street Station on April 12th.

And finally, add Calgary rockers Deadhorse to the April 30th bill at the Lo Pub, also featuring Gobble Gobble.

In Winnipeg Music News...Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings @ The Garrick; The Provincial Archives @ The Provincial Archives

Acclaimed Soul/Funk group Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will be at the Garrick Centre on May 20th, as per Rob Williams of the Winnipeg Free Press. No ticket info available just yet.

Add The War on Drugs to the Destroyer show going down at the WECC on April 13th.

And Departures to the Braids-headlined bill at the Albert on April 2nd.

In pretty unique tour news, Edmonton pop-folk band The Provincial Archives have booked a cross-Canada tour where they’ll perform concerts at, well, select provincial archives. This includes a date at the Manitoba Archives Reading Room on May 14th in the evening.

Look for Imaginary Cities to announce upcoming shows in Christmas Town, Gotham, and Caprica City.

In Winnipeg Music News...The Ribbon Rail Review @ Lo Pub; Face To Face @ WECC

Via Rail continues they’re very cool and pretty green partnership with Canadian indie acts. Starting March 23rd, Woodpigeon (above), The Phonemes, and The Mountains and the Trees will be touring across Canada together by rail, performing daily sets for passengers as well as evening concerts at selects stops. Alliteratively dubbed the Ribbon Rail Review, this tour includes a date at the friendly neighbourhood Lo Pub on April 6th.

Speaking of the Lo Pub, Edmonton's Gobble Gobble play there on April 30th.

And Saskatoon-based  indie-folk act Slow Down, Molasses drop by on March 19th.

Reunited SoCal punk rockers Face to Face are the West End Cultural Centre on Monday, May 2nd with brothers-in-arms Strung Out. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

Back in December Winnipeg’s favourite blues-rocker Romi Mayers recorded, in a single take, a live album consisting of all new material, and the end product, Lucky Tonight, finally sees the light of day this April 26th. Mayes will also be performing tunes off it at Times Change(d) on June 23rd as part of the annual, loosely defined Jazz fest.

The City Streets return to town for a gig at the Albert on March 29th in support of their newest EP, Peacemaker (street date: tomorrow).

And finally, local hip-hop duo Rebel Yell is holding their official cd release party at the Pyramid on my most favourite of holidays: April Fools Day!

In Winnipeg Music News...Hawksley Workman @ The WECC; NOFX @ The Burt

Great news Hawksley Workman fans: the prolific indie artist is playing an intimate solo show at our beloved West End Cultural Centre on Friday, April 8th. The closeness comes at a price though, as tickets will set you back $35 plus fees and what not. The presale kicks off tomorrow at 10, and the password is milk.

Punk icons NOFX return to Winnipeg on June 27th for a date at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

The inexhaustible septuagenarian folk-rocker known as Gordon Lightfoot plays the MTS Centre on December 2nd.

Vancouver-based folk-pop foursome Behind Sapphire swing by Exchange Community Church on March 29th.

Cancer Bats are at The WECC on May 5th.

David Lindley and Adrian Legg team up for a show at The WECC on April 5th.

And finally, awesome news: resident soul/pop twosome Imaginary Cities are now opening for every single date of the Pixies North American tour. Rightly earned!

Add Cannon Bros to the PS I Love You/Diamond Rings bill going down at the Lo Pub on March 25th. With the Dodos also at the WECC, this unquestionably makes March 25th the best single night of music in Winnipeg since Plants & Animals (WECC) and The Besnard Lakes (Albert) last April 29th.

Quadruple bill booked for April 5th at the Garrick: August Burns Red, Set Your Goals, Born of Osiris, and Texas In July.

In Winnipeg Music News...Hot Panda @ Lo Pub; Kim Churchill @ Pyramid; PoS Advances to Round 2!

Firstly, Edmonton’s finest indie-pop-rockers Hot Panda are keeping up their relentless touring schedule in support of their sophomore offering, How Come I’m Dead. Their current trek includes a stop at the Lo Pub on March 6th.

Twenty year-old Australian singer-songwriter Kim Churchill drops by the Pyramid on March 4th; he’s also playing an in-store set at the Folk Festival store earlier in the day, at 2:30.

March 22nd at the Park Theatre features a live performance by Juno-nominated jazz vocalist Emilie-Claire Barlow.

Upstart local songstress Emma Cloney is dropping her debut LP, Something to Say, on March 8th.

Pretty sure I mentioned this, but it’s not on the right, so perhaps it’s an unforgiveable oversight: Winnipeg soul/rock duo Imaginary Cities – who blew this blogger away when I saw them open for the RAA last year – are releasing their debut, Temporary Resident, tomorrow at the Lo Pub. The album officially hits store on February 22nd.

In Winnipeg Music News...Boats Sign To Kill Rock Stars; GZA @ Pyramid

First up, HUGE news out of local band Boats’s camp: the zany-pop makers have signed to the very happening Kill Rock Stars record label (home to such indie luminaries as Deerhoof, Marnie Stern, and Xiu Xiu). Look for Cannonballs, Cannonballs to be released via KRS on March 1st. Big congrats to them! Oh, and they'll be performing at the Lo Pub on March 11th.

Terrific triple bill at the Park Theatre on March 23rd: Aidan Knight, We Are The City, and The Liptonians.

The United Steel Workers of Montreal have booked a coast-to-coast tour in support of their latest offering, Three on a Tree; they’ll be at Times Change(d) on February 15th.

Hamilton’s Lee Harvey Osmond drop by the Park Theatre in a few days time, on February 10th.

Wu-Tang Clan founding member GZA (aka The Genius) is at the Pyramid on March 15th.

Resident musical-genre-defiers Flying Fox & The Hunter Gatherers are launching their newest disc, Hans My Blood, at the West End Cultural Centre on April 16th.

Presented by the West End Cultural Centre, Winnipeg singer-songwriter Christine Fellows is launching her fifth proper release, Femmes De Chez, at First Lutheran Church (580 Victor St.) on March 3rd. Advance tickets will ya $17.

Speaking of the WECC, Welsh songsmith Martyn Joseph returns there for a gig on March 23rd.

Resident electronic duo Beekeepers will perform a live glitchdump set at the Crescent Fort Rouge United Church on February 25th. Yes, I typed “glitchdump.”

Local blues-rockers The Root In Fluents are releasing their first full length album, Red River Flu, at the Pyramid on March 18th.

Can’t remember if I mentioned this one since it wasn't on the right prior to this post, and, if so, it’s definitely worth reiterating: Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few are at the WECC on March 8th.

In The Future...Pixes to play Doolittle @ The Centennial Concert Hall

They've been called all the important adjectives a band could ever dream of: omnipotent, influential, legendary, cerebral. Heck, I've even read unfuckwithable.

They are, of course, The Pixies, the reunited late 80s/early 90s alt-rock act led by incomparable frontman Black Francis, and best know, perhaps, for their seminal outing, Doolittle. And for fans of that mighty record, the Pixies are scheduled to play it in its entirety at the Centennial Concert Hall on April 27th.

Not sure when public ticket sales go down, but scuttlebutt has it some presale tickets will be served up this Friday morning on the band's website.
