In Winnipeg Music News...Neon Indian and Sleigh Bells Both Playing Here...On Separate Nights

>> Tuesday, 19 April 2011

So it turns out that, despite co-headlining a string of North American dates together, noise-pop purveyors Sleigh Bells and chillwave makers Neon Indian will not be sharing the stage in Winnipeg. Instead, they will be playing separately on back-to-back nights at the Pyramid, with Sleigh Bells on May 21st and Neon Indian the night before.

Indie-folksters Tasseomancy (sisters Romy and Sari Lightman) open for Timber Timbre, May 26th at the Park Theatre.

Montreal-stationed indie-rockers Miracle Fortress return to Winnipeg for a show at the Lo Pub on May 1st.

Also, eight-piece pop act Library Voices will be there on May 4th.

And finally, this Saturday at the Lo Pub welcome The Liptonians home from their recent tour in support of their sophomore release, Let's All March Back Into The Sea.

Singer-songwriter Sam Bradley is at the WECC on May 16th.

And finally, charm-pop quartet Death Cab For Cutie have recently announced a North American tour in support of their new album, Codes & Keys (street date: May 31st). As of now, this does not include a Winnipeg date. However, there are two full days between their Minneapolis show (May 21st) and their Edmonton date (May 24th), so you never know. Time for a Facebook campaign?

In Features...White-Hot Diamond Rings

>> Monday, 21 March 2011

Since his debut album Special Affections dropped this past October, glamour demi-god Diamond Rings (aka John O’Regan) has been one of this nation’s hottest musical acts.

But the songs populating Special Affections weren’t always the way we know and hear them.

The bulk of the record was written over a year, in two phases. O’Regan originally penned the songs on an acoustic guitar with the intention of performing them exclusively for friends at private events. And this is exactly what he did for a winter until deciding the songs needed flat-out reimagining.

“I wanted to reconceptualize (the songs) in a way that was a little more populist and exciting and engaging,” he explains over the phone from his hotel in Vancouver. “So that’s when I started teaching myself rudimentary electronic music production.”

This self-directed apprenticeship eventually led him to Special Affections: a warm and enveloping set of lyrical electro-pop numbers galvanized by O’Regan distinctive baritone and knack for writing highly personal, idiosyncratic tales.

The buzz surrounding the debut coupled with his incomparable, glammed-out one-man live show eventually earned O’Regan the opening slot on Swedish indie-pop sensation Robyn’s North American tour. And O’Regan took full advantage of this coveted opportunity.

“I haven’t played consistently to that many people before in my life,” he admits. “It really forced me to reevaluate the way I perform and the way I compose my music. It was a positive thing.”

For O’Regan though, this prime opening slot wasn’t just a chance to introduce Special Affections to large, unfamiliar audiences. It also allowed him to watch and learn from one of the world’s pre-eminent live performers each night as she took the stage.

“I’m always trying to grown and develop and improve,” says O’Regan. “Getting to watch an artist who has been doing this for quite sometime, night in and night out, was a real privilege. Hopefully I can put all that experience to good use.”

The experience O’Regan gained on tour with Robyn is currently being harnessed on his co-headlining tour with PS I Love You, another Canadian band whose stock has been rising exponentially since the fall.

“We both kinda started out making music together. Diamond Rings was new and when I put out my first 7 inch, they were on the B Side. I really believe in them as artists, and the feeling is mutual, so it only made sense…that we team up.”

And once the tour winds up, O’Regan plans to return home to Toronto for some much desired downtime. But only a few days worth.

“I want to keep working hard and improving, so I’ll be right back at it.”

Catch Diamond Rings this Friday night at the Lo Pub w/ PS I Love You and the Cannon Bros.

In Winnipeg Music News...Les Jupes' New Video; No Sleigh Bells?; Anvil @ The Albert

>> Friday, 18 March 2011

Local indie-rockers Les Jupes have a very fun and up-close-and-personal new video out for “One Solemn Oath” off their debut record, Modern Myths.

For those who haven’t been reading this site’s comments: Exhibit A and Exhibit B suggest that Sleigh Bells is not coming here with Neon Indian. Which completely sucks.

Legendary metal act ANVIL will fry synapses at the Albert on Tuesday, May 24th.

Canadian crooner Matt Dusk plays McPhillips Street Station on April 12th.

And finally, add Calgary rockers Deadhorse to the April 30th bill at the Lo Pub, also featuring Gobble Gobble.

In Winnipeg Music News...The Ribbon Rail Review @ Lo Pub; Face To Face @ WECC

>> Monday, 7 March 2011

Via Rail continues they’re very cool and pretty green partnership with Canadian indie acts. Starting March 23rd, Woodpigeon (above), The Phonemes, and The Mountains and the Trees will be touring across Canada together by rail, performing daily sets for passengers as well as evening concerts at selects stops. Alliteratively dubbed the Ribbon Rail Review, this tour includes a date at the friendly neighbourhood Lo Pub on April 6th.

Speaking of the Lo Pub, Edmonton's Gobble Gobble play there on April 30th.

And Saskatoon-based  indie-folk act Slow Down, Molasses drop by on March 19th.

Reunited SoCal punk rockers Face to Face are the West End Cultural Centre on Monday, May 2nd with brothers-in-arms Strung Out. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

Back in December Winnipeg’s favourite blues-rocker Romi Mayers recorded, in a single take, a live album consisting of all new material, and the end product, Lucky Tonight, finally sees the light of day this April 26th. Mayes will also be performing tunes off it at Times Change(d) on June 23rd as part of the annual, loosely defined Jazz fest.

The City Streets return to town for a gig at the Albert on March 29th in support of their newest EP, Peacemaker (street date: tomorrow).

And finally, local hip-hop duo Rebel Yell is holding their official cd release party at the Pyramid on my most favourite of holidays: April Fools Day!

In The Know...11 Questions w/ Hot Panda

>> Thursday, 3 March 2011

Like a lot of ambitious Canadian bands, Edmonton foursome Hot Panda are no stranger to touring and promoting their music in the flesh. The quartet are currently out and about in support of their sophomore release, How Come I'm Dead?, an unabashedly whimsical record that makes their genre-evading styling even harder to classify. There's a disparate art-rock track; a blast of psychedelic post-rock; a playful hip-hop track; and even some bouncy and melodic indie-pop numbers. And what makes How Come I'm Dead? work is that the members of Hot Panda are, well, talented enough to pull off all these sounds and styles and clearly have a lot of fun doing so.

I recently caught up with vocalist/guitarist Chris Connolly and asked him 11 questions. Discussed: the most underrated band in the nation; why he brings his own microphone everywhere; and who would win a fight between Stewart and Colbert.

Catch Hot Panda this Sunday at the Lo Pub.

1. Where are you right now?

Sitting in my living room on a sunny winter day in Vancouver.

2.What are some albums that completely changed your life?

Pulp - Different Class
The Strokes - Is This it?
The Beatles - White Album
Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
Mercury Rev - Desserter Songs
Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk

3. Of the records you own, which has the best cover art?

Some Girls by The Rolling Stones.

4. Who is the most underrated Canadian band at the moment?

Nickelback? But seriously The Wet Secretes! What a party!

5. What’s one piece of equipment absolutely essential to your live show?

Gotta be the microphone. My own microphone, I get grossed out at sharing microphones with other people.

6.What is your favourite music video?

I love that UNKLE video for Rabbit in Your Headlights. Or may Setting Sun by the Chemical Brothers.

7. What tv shows are you currently following?

Mad Men, The Office, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Big Love, 30 Rock, Daily Show...

8. What book(s) are you currently reading?

I Drink for a Reason by David Cross.

9. Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert?

In a fight? Stephen Colbert, he's got a way longer reach.

10. What’s your current ring tone?

It just vibrates. I'm all business.

11. And finally, would you rather have the ability to fly or turn invisible?

Easy. Fly. Next question. Wait. It's over. Easy.

In Winnipeg Music News...Lytics New Video; PoS Onto Round 3!

>> Friday, 18 February 2011

Just a few quick notes tonight…

Add Cannon Bros to the PS I Love You/Diamond Rings bill going down at the Lo Pub on March 25th. With the Dodos also at the WECC, this unquestionably makes March 25th the best single night of music in Winnipeg since Plants & Animals (WECC) and The Besnard Lakes (Albert) last April 29th.

Quadruple bill booked for April 5th at the Garrick: August Burns Red, Set Your Goals, Born of Osiris, and Texas In July.

Local hip-hop quartet The Lytics have recently released a beautifully shot new video into the world for their song, “Last Bit (Lovely Words).” Catch them at the Pyramid on March 3rd.

And, if you haven’t heard, Painting over Silence is somehow, miraculously, holy-shit-was-I-surprised ONTO ROUND 3 in CBC Radio 3’s Searchlight contest for the “Best Canadian Music Website”. I know what you’re thinking and, yes, I am buying a lottery ticket for tomorrow night. It's been a banner month…

Thank you so much for voting!

In Winnipeg Music News...Hot Panda @ Lo Pub; Kim Churchill @ Pyramid; PoS Advances to Round 2!

>> Thursday, 10 February 2011

Firstly, Edmonton’s finest indie-pop-rockers Hot Panda are keeping up their relentless touring schedule in support of their sophomore offering, How Come I’m Dead. Their current trek includes a stop at the Lo Pub on March 6th.

Twenty year-old Australian singer-songwriter Kim Churchill drops by the Pyramid on March 4th; he’s also playing an in-store set at the Folk Festival store earlier in the day, at 2:30.

March 22nd at the Park Theatre features a live performance by Juno-nominated jazz vocalist Emilie-Claire Barlow.

Upstart local songstress Emma Cloney is dropping her debut LP, Something to Say, on March 8th.

Pretty sure I mentioned this, but it’s not on the right, so perhaps it’s an unforgiveable oversight: Winnipeg soul/rock duo Imaginary Cities – who blew this blogger away when I saw them open for the RAA last year – are releasing their debut, Temporary Resident, tomorrow at the Lo Pub. The album officially hits store on February 22nd.

And lastly, Painting over Silence…ADVANCED TO ROUND 2 in CBC Radio 3’s Searchlight competition for “Canada’s Best Music Website”?!?! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who voted for this site!

If you’re still up for some voting action, please help Painting over Silence advance to the round of 30 by casting your ballot here.

In Winnipeg Music News...Pixies' Second Date Added; Juno Nominations Galore

>> Tuesday, 1 February 2011

Editor’s note: from this post forward, I’ll be combining new concert announcements and local band news into one all-mighty, essential, don't-miss post.

Update: presale password for Pixies' second show is keys.
First up, bad news, Pixies ticket scalpers. After their April 27th show sold out with Katy-Perry-ticket-like alacrity, the iconic band has added a second Winnipeg date: April 26th at the Centennial Concert Hall. Presalers are up for grabs starting Thursday @ 10 a.m. while general public sales kick off Friday @ 10 a.m.

Newmarket, Ontario’s greatest indie music exports, Tokyo Police Club continue their relentless touring schedule, returning to Winnipeg on April 13th for a gig at the Pyramid. Said The Whale and Dinosaur bones round out the bill.

Luke Boyd, aka Classified, is at the Garrick on April 8th. Show is 18+.

A blogger is trying to review EVERY band playing SXSW this year (2000+) in an effort to help lucky SXSW attendees plot their music itinerary. Some kind and deserving and interesting words for Winnipeg’s own Imaginary Cities (..."one of my favorite new finds so far"), The Lytics ("..a tag team effort of impressive rapping skills."), and The Liptonians (…"at times sounding like if Coldplay decided to become an underground prog rock band").

Juno noms ahoy! Winnipeg was well represented today during the 2010 Juno Award Nominations announcement. Some nominees: Del Barber, Chic Gamine, and, umm, Neil Young, if we can still count Young as one of us. See full list at CBC Manitoba.

Resident songstress Lindsey White has announced a smattering of new live dates including March 12th @ McNally Robinson.

Calgary-based recording artist Jay Crocker is out supporting his debut solo record, Co-Stars, and will be at the Lo Pub on March 24th.

Cape Breton singer-songwriter Carmen Townsend was handpicked by Heart to open for them during their Canadian tour, which includes a date at the MTS Centre on February 17th. Wait. Heart still exist?

Correction: Christine Fellows’s new album is called Femme De Chez Nous not Femme De Chez (Thanks to Michael for the heads up).

And last but not least, local indie-poppers Royal Canoe are offering up a free download of a new song “Today We’re Belivers” on their website. It’s a good one.

In The Future...PS I Love You/Diamond Rings Double Bill; Braids; Children's Rehab Rockout

>> Monday, 17 January 2011

First up, great double-bill going down at the Lo Pub on March 25th: guitar-and-drums pair PS I Love You continue their tireless touring schedule in support of their excellent disc, Meet Me At Muster Station (#9 on my personal top ten records of 2K10 list) w/ lo fi indie-popper Diamond Rings.

Oft-buzzed-about indie act Braids release their debut disc, Native Speaker, tomorrow before embarking on a major North American tour; the massive trek includes a date at the Albert on April 2nd.

Resident singer-songwriter Ingrid Gatin performs at the Exchange Community Church on January 22nd.

Speaking of Winnipeg talent, the Children's Rehab Rockout – a local band competition/charity fundraiser featuring 5 up and coming Peg City bands – takes place on February 17th at the Pyramid. All proceeds go toward the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation.

Also, The Bluebird North Songwriters’ Showcase – featuring Don Amero, Bean, Scott Nolan, and James Struthers – is being held at the Park Theatre on Tuesday, February 8th.

All ten members of Five Alarm Funk will bring their fun and relentlessly energetic live show reputation to the Pyramid on March 4th.

And finally, prog-metal act Protest The Hero return to town for a gig at the West End Cultural Centre on March 30th w/ Maylene and the Sons of Disaster & Tesseract.

In The Future...Destroyer @ The WECC; Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans @ The WECC; And More!

>> Friday, 7 January 2011

After the annual December show announcement lull, exciting concerts are starting to materialize all over Peg City:

First up, Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar) returns to Winnipeg for the first time since appearing alongside fellow New Pornographers early last year. The accomplished songwriter is at the West End Cultural Centre on April 13th, touring in support of his latest offering, Kaputt (street date: January 25th).  Tickets went on sale earlier today. War on Drugs kick starts the evening.

After announcing a full slate of cdn tour dates that surprisingly did not include a Winnipeg show, Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans have added one: the collective will be at the WECC on Saturday, March 5th. Presale password is falconlake. SISKYOU is also on the bill.

Local songsmith Matt Epp is releasing his latest record at the WECC on April 23rd.

Add indie-popper Gentleman Reg to the January22nd Sarah Harmer bill at the Garrick.

Speaking of openers, Sweet Thing open for Down With Webster, March 5th @ the Burt.

And last up, Toronto-based indie-folk artist Rob Moir plays the Lo Pub on February 12th.

In The Flesh...Brian Wilson @ Pantages; Sarah Harmer @ The Garrick; The Details @ The Lo Pub

>> Tuesday, 16 November 2010

Nary a week goes by when I don’t read “breezy Brian Wilson harmonies” or “channel a warm, feel good Brian Wilson vibe” in an album review. Heck, I may have even written something similar before. But, these comparisons are apropos to the man’s indelible impact on pop music, and his place in the rock ‘n’ roll canon is undeniable. See and hear the icon live and in the flesh at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre on June 22nd. Tickets range from $65.50 - $95.50, which is sorta reasonable, relative to recent exorbitantly priced top level tickets for U2, Young, and Dylan.

Also, the lovely and enviably talented Sarah Harmer returns to town on January 22nd for a date at the Garrick Theatre.  Presale tomorrow. Public sale Saturday. Tix $33.50.

And finally, local denizens The Details rock the Lo Pub on November 27th. Their new EP drops...today.

In The Future...The JP Hoe Xmas Show @ The Park Theatre; Interpol NOT Opening For U2

>> Tuesday, 9 November 2010

Photo: JP Hoe et al. performing at the 2008 holiday show.

First up, the annual JP Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show goes down on December 17th and 18th (same show both nights, I believe, not accounting for spontaneity) at the Park Theatre. Xmas songs'll be sung; Fred Penner'll read; and zany holiday-themed costumes'll be worn.

I've attended the event twice. Best costume to date? A band member dressed as Kevin McCallister.

Second, bad news U2-attending Interpol fans: they're not opening. Good news U2-attending fans of the Fray: they are.

Third, resident indie-rockers The Details have a new EP called The Original Mark out on November 16th, a preview of sorts for their forthcoming LP, which'll hopefully see the light of day in 2K11. Hear and see the band live at the Lo Pub on November 27th.

And finally, Little Miss Higgins drops by the Park Theatre on December 10th w/ Righteous Ike.
