Indefinite Hiatus

So...

....most of you have deduced by now that this blog is on an indefinite hiatus.

Painting over Silence has wildly exceeded all expectations. It started as a fun medium for me to keep track of upcoming concerts, conduct interviews with bands, review some albums, etc and quickly spiraled out of control. The inquiries from publicists, artists, and local venues was impossible to keep up with and I was spending 20-25 hours a week blogging during the peak of this site on top of working a full-time job and attending school part-time.

I never expected this site to lead to some employment with CBC. Or to place in the top 30 "best music blogs in Canada" contest. Or even secure me a spot on the Polaris Music Prize jury. For the better part of five years, my inbox was a daily source of  awe and wonderment.

Unfortunately, this exhausting pace has caught up with me over the past few years, and I found myself having less and less free time for blogging. And presently that spare time is almost nil.

So, for now, this site is on an indefinite hiatus.

If you want to hear about upcoming concerts in real time (at least as quickly as I can manage), please check my Twitter feed.

Thank you for reading over the years.

You can get lost in the music for hours: The Head and the Heart @ The Burton Cummings Theatre

>> Tuesday, 8 April 2014

The Head and the Heart
The Burton Cummings Theatre
Winnipeg, MB
Monday, April 7th

True story: I gave up my Jets tickets last night in favour of attending The Head and the Heart show at the Burt.

I rarely miss a Jets game on TV (I even listened to their games while in Iceland at 3 a.m.), so it's even rarer that I give up my tickets.

But in the end I unquestionably made the right decision. The Head and the Heart (whose bassist, coincidentally, is a big Jets fan and even sported a new logo t-shirt throughout the set) put on a magnificent, inspired show. Drawing from both of their mighty fine releases, the sextet was loose, spirited, and clearly passionate about the curious brand of melodic indie-folk they irresistibly purvey.

This was on the best sets I've seen in quite some time, and I eagerly look forward to once again giving up my Jets tickets should the Head and the Heart roll through town on a game night. Unless its'a playoff game. But, hey, that's highly unlikely of happening anytime soon.

Album Review: Future Islands "Singles"

>> Wednesday, 26 March 2014

Rating: **** out of 5

Thanks largely to old man Letterman’s enthusiastic response to frontman’s Samuel T. Herring’s sweet, sweet dance moves during the above performance of “Seasons (Waiting on You)”, Future Islands are on the verge of household name status. And the recognition is well-deserved. The band’s latest, Singles, offers fresh, infectious, and well-crafted dance numbers all galvanized by Herring’s deceptively cool and frequently surprising vocals. Listen how quickly his casual delivery devolves into a guttural growl as best evinced on “Fall from Grace.” This record will have even the shyest of wallflowers tripping the light fantastic.
